by Michael John Hunt Acylic on canvas 34" x 26"
The Hunt Gallery has been in Sandwich for 49 years - so 2022 should be worthy of a celebration or three. When we opened in April 1972 Sandwich was a thriving small market town in East Kent. Strand Street was open to two-way traffic; there was a cattle market every Thursday and even on non-market days, the town was always bustling. Pfizers had one building on the outskirts of the town in the 1950s and eventually expanded (Viagra was developed here!) so that its footprint was as big as the town itself. Now that Pfizers have let many buildings go, a thriving science park has moved in so the tradition continues.
Strand Street - the gallery is at No. 33 - is the longest continuous run of timber framed buildings in the country. Our building dates back to 1296 (+/- 30 years), which doesn’t make for a good wifi signal... but we manage. If you have looked at our website and viewed our Matterport video, you will see that we have a modern interior so that we can hang paintings and prints in a more contemporary setting. Our clients are pleased to visit us from all over the world when they are in the UK and Sandwich presents an excellent environment of history and winding streets - and a small, but world class, museum with an original copy of the Magna Carta and a dead rat from the plague! And for golfers Royal St. George’s is just along the road.
We have only ever sold Michael’s work in the gallery which is a testament to his talent and versatility. Historical interiors are the mainstay of what we take to exhibitions but his landscapes, wildlife, cityscapes, whimsy are all to be found in the gallery.
